CHALK IT UP!

“Consciousness over physics,” describes how John views the challenge of combining diverse materials in unexpected ways. Fusing two elements, whose inherent properties appear completely contrary, into a beautiful and fully functional piece of art is why many seek JOHNHOUSHMAND creations.

Havas Worldwide, one of the leading global advertising and communications companies, commissioned us to create a communal table for their break room that would facilitate the ever-changing creative process. Monumental in scale at 24’ long, they asked if we could incorporate a “chalk board” feature with our signature live-edge wood aesthetic. Additionally, the wood used had to meet their deep commitment to sustainability.

Using a tree that was downed in a nor’easter, we began. Turning two live-edges of high character black walnut in towards the center of the table, and creating mating live-edges in Italian slate, Table No. 0268 comes alive with touch, kiss, and flow. Elevated on blackened steel legs with a stiletto heel curve, this communal table invites the firm’s creative talent to gather for sustenance as well as stimulation. Coffee in one hand, chalk in the other, No. 0268 invites all to gather and brainstorm.

Chalk it up to Houshmand to design and create a venue to bring creative ideas to the planet.

DALE COHEN DESIGNSTUDIO AND JOHNHOUSHMAND: MONUMENTAL LANTERN AT THE HAMPTON DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE

· Architectural Designs, Events, Features, Furniture Designs

This summer we have had the opportunity to work with some wonderful designers who have featured the work of JOHNHOUSHMAND in their show house spaces. Working with Dale B. Cohen for dale cohen designstudio’s space at the Hamptons Designer Showhouse was an exciting creative endeavor. What emerged from this collaboration was groundbreaking and innovative!

Dale’s initial concept for her room on the Terrace Level of the Hamptons Designer Showhouse was to create a beautiful space for a collection of art.  Taking this creative approach allowed Dale to work without the constriction by a specific program, like a bedroom or bathroom, affording her the opportunity to make something out of the box.  During the preliminary discussion between John and Dale, John shared his enthusiasm about expanding into the world of lighting.  Dale was looking to create a large and sculptural object to animate her room.  Sitting down together, the collaboration between the two designers was an easy exchange of ideas arriving at the Monumental Lantern, No. 0277.

John looks for his work to bring about an extraordinary way of viewing the physical world. The materials used to design and create are chosen with the utmost care and due diligence in order to achieve a physical creation that evokes a visceral and soul touching experience.

With this project, it was the weaving process that allowed the design intent to come to full fruition. The materials themselves had limits and these constraints defined the work and the ultimate shape of the lantern that was achievable. Woven, razor thin micro slabs of wood, converging with the iridescent cast of frosted acrylic, all held together by an ethereal glow. The Monumental Lantern emerged as a beautiful, elegant form.  And while massive in its actual dimensions, the lantern achieves an air of lightness and floating, especially when lit.

This melding of geometric rigidity and natural looseness is only the preliminary step towards future lighting possibilities at JOHNHOUSHMAND. We are positive that Dale’s room in the ShowHouse will give an extra “glow” to the summer.

LongHouse Reserve: White Night Summer Benefit

· Architectural Designs, Events, Features

Jack Lenor Larsen and John Houshmand have a shared history of mutual respect, deep admiration and collaboration.  We are honored by the request to have our No. 0222 Cast Aluminum Director’s Chair – clad in a signature Larsen textile – be a featured item at the upcoming auction benefiting Jack’s foundation at LongHouse Reserve.

When founding LongHouse, Jack’s mission was to create a place that exemplifies living amongst art in all its forms.  His collections of ethnographic and handcrafts, gardens, sculpture and programs invite the public to embrace a life as textured and signature as his textiles. Layers of beauty mature and evolve from season to season at LongHouse, never failing to inspire anyone who crosses its bound. This philosophy is deeply inspirational to John and all of us at JOHNHOUSHMAND and motivates our love for nature, natural forms and combined materials.

This Saturday, July 20th marks this year’s benefit auction evening and LongHouse will be honoring architect Richard Meier, artist Ai Weiwei, and in memoriam of Lisa de Kooning. Bids for pieces in the auction can be placed online in advance of the auction at: http://paddle8.com/auctions/longhouse.

· Events, Features, Furniture Designs

If you weren’t able to stop by the Holiday House Hamptons over the 4th of July holiday, you still have time! The house will be open until July 21st for you to visit and experience stunning rooms created by top designers.

We are so pleased The Design Studio embraced us in their vision for their elegant outdoor area.  They chose to incorporate our cast acrylic low table, No. 0221, in their graceful interpretation of an alfresco entertaining area. This harmonious seating arrangement plays hide and seek amidst the billowing curtains creating an atmosphere of airy contentment.  Plush chairs invite guests to relax and sip on refreshments while gazing upon our piece that wonderfully transitions here from indoor to outdoor.  The No. 0221 seamlessly marries with the color palette of its given surroundings.  In this particular setting, the translucence of the cast acrylic accentuates the supple tones of pink and mauve suffusing the ambience with a gently rolling, effervescent air.

And for a bit of an inside scoop… be on the look out for the No. 0221 on an upcoming episode of The Real Housewives of New York who took a seat in The Design Studio’s space to dish their latest thoughts and tidbits.

CUSTOM DREAMSCAPE

· Architectural Designs, Features, Furniture Designs, New Products

Sometimes, the most intriguing features are created by the simplest forms.

Little round discs clinging innocuously to the side of a tree; this colony of fungi takes hold of a tree and weaves their roots into its core. In a process called spalting, these deep roots develop atypical markings throughout the grain, unique to each tree. Although it is what ultimately kills the tree, the black, brown, and amber ribbons entwine and crisscross their way through the tree’s fibrous tissue, leaving splendid coloration in their wake.

At JOHNHOUSHMAND we believe creativity is born through many iterations. A 16″ block would normally be perceived as a mundane object. But, when John began playing around with groups of beautifully spalted maple blocks, the idea for “Dreamscape Sculptures” began to take shape. These functional sculptures, No. 0274.1 and No. 02741.2 , are available in other compositions and can be arranged in a customized design to fit within the client’s space. The individuality of each block adds to the original nature of each of our custom dreamscapes.

Lots of creative block here.

BRONZE BEAUTY

· Architectural Designs, Features, New Products

Wood, glass and bronze! Oh my!

Wall treatments have always been a specialty in the world of JOHNHOUSHMAND. We strive to create striking pieces that resonate in the hearts of our clients and break the mold of conventional design.

With this in mind, the same clients that commissioned us to create their silently expanding banquet table No. 0216, wanted us to create a statement piece for their refined master suite bathroom, designed by Alene Workman. (Read all about our collaboration with Alene and her amazing team in our earlier post).

They longed for something that was elegant while engaging the airy, bright space.

JOHNHOUSHMAND’s solution was No. 0214, a serpentine sculptural screen mimicking the flow of the passing tides of the Atlantic. The 2.5” bronze curves are backed with frosted glass creating the ethereal lighting that gives way to a peaceful oasis, setting the tone for the room.

At a massive 8 feet by 5 feet, this bronze beauty transports the soul to a place of tranquility.

MAGIC SLAB

· Furniture Designs, New Products

Abracadabra! Look at the rabbit we’ve pulled out of our hat this time!

We are ecstatic to reveal our most innovative design yet, No. 0262.1.

This groundbreaking table is pure enchantment and will bewitch the eyes. The clear 2” acrylic slab suspends a razor thin black walnut microslab flush with the surface. All of this floats weightlessly in the air above two live edge black walnut legs. A marriage between two materials never looked so fascinating.

No. 0262.1 was commissioned by a Seattle family, deeply involved in the culture and preservation of trees, and the emerging art of the Pacific Northwest. They were looking for a special piece around which to share their close-knit family dinners. No. 0262.1 fulfills those desires with the beauty and warmth of the character grade black walnut, and the visionary design of the Magic Slab.

A passion piece of magic.

ENGINEERED TO PERFECTION

· Architectural Designs, Features, Furniture Designs, New Products

Grab the spring issue of Florida Design Magazine on shelves now and be blown away with some of the best in architecture and interior design that Florida has to offer. Among the cream of the crop you will find an amazing private penthouse in Miami, specially designed by our friend Alene Workman. This residence was specially engineered to withstand hurricanes, while also providing an entertaining showplace high above the sands and lapis lazuli waters of Miami Beach.

Alene Workman created the vast social space in a 360-degree arc, surrounded by floor to ceiling windows. At the center of this, friends gather around an oversized JOHNHOUSHMAND dining table, No. 0216, to take in the breath-taking vistas of the south Atlantic.

No. 0216 was engineered to perfection to accommodate some very special requirements of this castle in the sky. The client wanted the option of expanding the dining table for especially large dinner parties. The starting length measures 10 feet but can expand to a stunning 22 feet. We engineered a custom system that silently slides the extra table leaves into place. And remarkably, there are no wheels or bearings in the engineering… Having made it with rollers first, these were ditched in place of UHMB sliding strips, as the rollers were too noisy. Additionally, the leaves were hollowed out and aircraft grade aluminum honeycomb was placed inside to make them light enough to lift and place with ease.

Overall a masterpiece of design and engineering, to perfectly match a masterpiece of special design!

Check out the video below to see No. 0216 in action!
