Robert Isabell House, Angel Franco, New York Times

by Angel Franco for the New York Times

On January 27, 2011, the JOHNHOUSHMAND team attended the ODE TO ROBERT ISABELL party hosted by Cortney and Bob Novogratz of Sixx Design. A world renowned floral designer and events planner who gave Studio 54 its sparkle quite literally one New Year’s Eve, installing 5″ of glitter on its floors, Robert Isabell passed away in the summer of 2009. The contents of this historic West Village home were auctioned off by Sotheby’s in December 2009, and the house was put on the market.

A year and a half later, the Novogratzes presented their ODE TO ROBERT ISABELL party. The decor was as inspired and quirky as the home itself, with small clear chandeliers, bright chunky chairs, glass tables with chrome legs and artificial rose garlands hanging from the ceiling. In attendance were John Houshmand, glitter artist Camomile Hixon (whose piece “Pleasure Dome” sparkled above the crowd), and JH2 One Tree Home partner Jack Donenfeld.

Also present at the event was JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s No. 0103.3 Cast Aluminum Table, from which cocktails and wine flowed. The subtle gleam from the cast grain added another source of shine to the evening, complementing the mod decor, while the rich black walnut legs harked back to Robert Isabell’s Mid-Century and Minimalist art and interior collection. A great time was had by all!

W Hotel New York Lexington Benches

· Furniture Designs · , , , , , , , , ,

As a followup to our last post on the W Hotel in Hoboken, we thought we’d share another piece JOHNHOUSHMAND created for the W Hotel New York Lexington Avenue. This pair of Extinct Old Growth Heart Pine Low Benches were constructed for the Extreme Wow Penthouse Suite terrace. These old growth heart pine timbers were reclaimed from renovated New York City buildings, saving this precious wood from being carelessly discarded. They now live a continued life as gorgeously minimalistic benches atop Lexington Avenue.

Not only are these bespoke benches perfect for the out-of-doors, but also compliment indoor decor beautifully. The inherent history within these timbers lends character and meaning to their surface. Perfect for entryways, hallways, living rooms, or even at the foot of a bed, these benches will add charm and history to any part of your space.

Woven Spalted Maple Screens at the W Hotel in Hoboken

· Architectural Designs

Across the Hudson River and a mere fifteen minute subway ride from Manhattan is the W Hoboken Hotel. Built in 2009 by architects Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, this is the fifth W Hotel in the New York City metro area.

(from Gwathmey Siegel & Associates’ site)

With spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, the hotel also boasts a Bliss spa, Living Room lounge, Chandelier Room and Zylo, a Tuscan steak house. Designed by Long Island Architects Bentel & Bentel, Zylo embodies the spirit of Hoboken through delicious Italian food prepared by executive chef Roberto Bellissimo.

Defining the Salumeria section of the restaurant are JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s spalted maple microslab Room Dividers. These woven innovations are accompanied by a woven Window Sculpture. The Room Dividers are doubled microslab spalted maple interlacements on timber bases with a light barrier between for added privacy. Perfect for loft apartments, dance studios, conference rooms, or banquet halls, these screens can be made in single or double width, with or without the light barrier.

Woven Screens

The woven Window Sculpture was installed on location, constructed of pine, walnut, and oak microslabs, creating a feeling of a deconstructed interior wall, as if the cement were reinforced with microslabs instead of steel.

Whether you’re visiting New York, or are from the New York City metro area and are looking for a Tuscan-style meal, Zylo is perfect for soaking up the Manhattan skyline, and watching the comings and goings on the New York harbor, and enjoying a private viewing of two unique pieces of JOHNHOUSHMAND sculpture.

New ClearSpan Building Completed

· Our History · , , , , ,

Our co-workers in the Catskills have been as busy as bees! They have just finished building a new ClearSpan building to store our JOHNHOUSHMAND reclaimed wood slabs. A year ago, a snowfall of an impressive 54 inches caused the roof of one of our smaller slab storage units to collapse. Our entire slab inventory, which consists of thousands, needed to be combined into one cramped center with slab piles stacked at nearly 8 to 10 feet high!

This new building will almost double the storage space we currently have, with an additional benefit: to air-dry slabs in order to shorten kiln-drying time. During a Catskills summer, the heat from the sun on the fabric roof of the building combined with the breeze from open doors allows the slabs to dry quickly yet evenly. We are thrilled that this process will reduce the energy needed to make our beautiful tables, thus making an organic product even greener!

The ClearSpan building is made of galvanized steel frames and a fabric roofing cover. It measures 195 feet long, 55 feet wide, and 22 feet high. Definitely a great sized space to comfortably house our precious organic slabs!

Just One Isn’t Enough: Black Walnut & Bronze Patina Consoles

· Architectural Designs, Furniture Designs · , , , , , , ,

Variations within individual wood logs are such that different segments will show a wide range of personality. These three console tables, No. 0050.1, No. 0050.2, and No. 0050.3 each have their own distinctive flavor. The black walnut tops were crafted from squared off roundbacks and are in line with JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s philosophy of using the entire tree. A pair of perpendicular bronze patina legs were then attached to complete each piece.

These three consoles are being sent off to the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (covered previously on this blog) where they will be used in hallways and entryways. These consoles would translate perfectly to the home: in a foyer collecting car keys and mail, a unique sidebar set-up at a cocktail party, or showcasing family photos and keepsakes behind a couch.

Though no matter the use it is clear, repetition of this kind is far from boring. One just isn’t enough!

They are comprised of husband and wife team Sally Wilson and John Kelsey who have completed projects in many intriguing New England spaces such as a former 1907 stable and carriage house, a downtown Boston high-rise office building, and an ocean front home.

JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s No. 0201 The Mulberry Lazy Susan Dining Table and No. 0187 Glass Low Table with Black Walnut Microslab was featured on their blog which is full of great professional interior design inspiration. We’d love to see the room they’d create with either piece!

This particular Lazy Susan Dining Table was destined for a beautiful house in Acapulco, Mexico.

We’re pleased as punch to be included in their “New & Noteworthy” segment, featuring our sleek and sustainable furnishings. SHAZAM, JOHNHOUSHMAND’s latest collection which blends together sophisticated style and extreme feats of micro-engineering, is highlighted, as well as one of our “must-have” pieces, No. 0028 Beaver Table. This piece is both functional and visually stimulating, constructed from gnawed branches and a ¾” piece of blue Starfire glass.  As the snows melt and nature readies itself for spring, this piece brings to mind renewal and rebuilding.

Hudson Valley Fireplace Mantel

· Architectural Designs, Audio Slideshows, Uncategorized · , , , , ,

JOHNHOUSHMAND just finished installing a sublime fireplace mantel, No. 0210, in one of architect Jo Machinist’s creations in the heart of the Hudson River Valley. This beautifully pastoral area is home to the Hudson River School, where painters Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Church painted the valley in all its romantic glory. This mantelpiece is a welcome addition to this tradition, celebrating the natural beauty of the area.

This rustic solid maple timber mantel with hand-hammered bronze pitons was installed in an airy, light-filled great room. Take a look at the slide show to see it from all angles.
