There is a flurry of activity happening at our upstate workshop this spring, and many new works will be debuting at the 23rd annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair. (ICFF, Javits Center, NYC: Sunday May 14-Tuesday May 17th)
Here is a sneak peek at one of our brand new works:
The bright No. 0050.4 Hammered Bronze and Roundback Dining Table/Console is the first ever to feature a light polished bronze leg with an undulating curve. The beautifully rich black walnut roundback is set on hand-hammered bronze legs. The deep color of the wood is offset by the luminous curved bronze base, capturing light and shadow effortlessly. Custom designed for a Central Park West apartment with a classic Upper East Side aesthetic, this dining table will be the centerpiece among a contrasting set of plush wing-back chairs after the ICFF is over.
On January 27, 2011, the JOHNHOUSHMAND team attended the ODE TO ROBERT ISABELL party hosted by Cortney and Bob Novogratz of Sixx Design. A world renowned floral designer and events planner who gave Studio 54 its sparkle quite literally one New Year’s Eve, installing 5″ of glitter on its floors, Robert Isabell passed away in the summer of 2009. The contents of this historic West Village home were auctioned off by Sotheby’s in December 2009, and the house was put on the market.

A year and a half later, the Novogratzes presented their ODE TO ROBERT ISABELL party. The decor was as inspired and quirky as the home itself, with small clear chandeliers, bright chunky chairs, glass tables with chrome legs and artificial rose garlands hanging from the ceiling. In attendance were John Houshmand, glitter artist Camomile Hixon (whose piece “Pleasure Dome” sparkled above the crowd), and JH2 One Tree Home partner Jack Donenfeld.
Also present at the event was JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s No. 0103.3 Cast Aluminum Table, from which cocktails and wine flowed. The subtle gleam from the cast grain added another source of shine to the evening, complementing the mod decor, while the rich black walnut legs harked back to Robert Isabell’s Mid-Century and Minimalist art and interior collection. A great time was had by all!

The JOHNHOUSHMAND team was up late this weekend installing the Abraham-May Architects‘ innovative architectural structure “LOG”.
As we described in the last post, “LOG” is a re-imagining of the traditional Jewish Sukkah for the international architecture and design competition Sukkah City 2010, now on view at Union Square Park, NYC.
We arrived in the middle of Saturday night, amid eleven other construction teams eager to put up a truly dazzling display of vision and acumen. It took 20 men, a 3 ton crane, a good amount of klieg lighting, and about 6 hours of intense labor to put together this deceptively complex fabrication. The mood was palpably one of excitement, as you can see from our home-made video below:
A soon as the sun rose, the park was swarmed with crowds eager to view this hand-picked selection of architecturally abstract naturalism.
If you haven’t already stopped by, we encourage you to do so, as this showcase is ONLY on view until this evening – Monday, September 20th (when we get the pleasure of taking it all back down again).
Working in the north country can be a challenge in the depth of winter…. Last week’s snowstorm made for some interesting scenes….
(Needless to say, we all missed a day of work!)
“In addition to our NYC showroom (The Portal to Imagination!), we
have just opened our west coast showroom at the Pacific Design Center
in Los Angeles. Also featuring the Hous Projects gallery, this 3000SF
space is visual caviar, with exceptional pieces of JOHNHOUSHMAND
functional art combined with the work emerging international artists.
The collection gives the viewer a dynamic experience of these pieces
in a setting which reads both display and livable. Please come by,
share our vision, and maybe even a glass of wine. Currently in space

The summer is finally upon us in New York. With the emergence of the sun and long evenings and summer Fridays, it seems the whole city is buzzing as people pack their suitcases to escape for long weekends. And now there is a brand new place to go kick back and soak up all that vitamin D the winter months did not provide…the Bungalow Hotel.
Bungalow is the Jersey Shore’s first real boutique hotel and the lifestyle you can escape to there is marked by the eclectic, luxurious atmospheres created by Bob and Courtney Novogratz of Sixx Design. When the Novogratz team was looking to develop a concept for their lobby, they knew they needed something that would strike their guests the moment they crossed inside. For this, they came to us at John Houshmand Design and we are proud to announce our collaboration with them.
Inspired by the No. 0130 bar of stacked Black Walnut in our showroom, the Novogratzs’ worked with John to morph it into a bar as well as columns, benches, a reception desk, votive niches, shelving and stools. It is a project that expresses our collaborative abilities. We love to synergize with designers who are ready to explore new directions. We are more than pleased to take one of our classic looks and dive off in fresh waters. Our abilities are wide ranging so never hesitate to be in touch. Also, all of our work is custom, so it is a bit like a Mongolian BBQ…you can bring to your plate the elements of our style you would like to see married and John will cook you up something tasty.
p.s. Our team attended the opening night party at Bungalow so those crazy people you see with their heads sticking out of the tree are…well, us! Go check it out for yourself and have a margarita in our honor.
Ladies and gentlemen of the design world all know the beacon of the spring season is the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. The 2009 edition of ICFF will run Friday, May 16 – Tuesday, May 19 and here at John Houshmand we will be welcoming all parties to a cocktail hour on the evening of Monday, May 18 from 6 to 8 pm.
What a better way to cap off a weekend choc full of inspiring ideas, networking and fighting the crowds like an aisle salmon than to join us to relax with a glass of wine? You will also be able to mingle with brand new pieces we are ushering in exclusively for the soiree. Look for our acrylic line, Clearly Functional, as well as a preview to the Saddle Shoe Collection and fresh off the shopbot stellar dining tables. Our trademark No. 0094 Starfire Open Glass Low Table with Black Walnut Slabs will also be making an appearance and she likes attention so be sure to say hello!
