Over the years, our ongoing collaboration with Bob & Cortney Novogratz has given us the opportunity to work on some amazing projects. Our favorites include the new Babakul store at Fred Segal, Santa Monica and the Robert Isabell Party in NYC’s Greenwich Village.
For Babakul, the Novogratz’s were interested in developing a design which would highlight the brand’s organic, effortlessly cool, California vibe. We worked closely with Bob & Cortney to design and produce modular steel shelving – complete with white plumeria handles – a live-edge, bleached sales island, frosted glass, microslab fitting room doors, and a corner shelving unit where tired husbands could kick back and browse the literature on hand. We think the effect of these pieces, together with such stylistic touches as a custom Debbie Harry piece by artist Ann Carrington, Philippe Starck chairs, and some charming goldfish make a great combination.
For the Robert Isabell party, JOHNHOUSHMAND loaned the Novogratz’ our signature cast aluminum dining table (No. 0103.3) to act as a bar for their well-attended, house opening event. Standing aside custom made sparkle paintings by artist Camomile Hixon and vintage 1960s apple green lounge chairs underneath a halo of handmade, faux flower garlands the over all effect was breathtaking – and fun inducing.
JOHNHOUSHMAND and Bob & Cortney Novogratz recently teamed up again, this time to refinish a charming, downtown, outdoor patio (in 30 minutes or less).
The space featured a wrought iron fence, brick facade with climbing ivy, a river rock floor and a garden box – but now much else. With a garden party happening that evening we needed some magic, fast. Weaving together a dozen or so microslabs to create a warm, wooden canopy was the first step. We then suspended modified candles sporadically underneath with invisible wires to create the illusion of floating candles. Finally, to round out the effect, we built a quick microslab trestle and popped a live-edge pine slab on top of the existing, outdated picnic table – instant fix!
Bob & Cortney put on the finishing touches – an oversized, turquoise, clay vase holding burgundy calla lilies was the centerpiece between two, smaller, purple hydrangea plants. An assortment of vintage, white iron garden chairs circle the table, punctuated by seersucker cushions and brightly colored, striped throw pillows.
The overall effect is one of Mediterranean ease and effortless entertaining. Take a look at the process below.

JOHNHOUSHMAND was recently featured on luxe men’s lifestyle blog LIFTLUXE. Here is what the sophisticated daily had to say about our cutting edge designs:
Some vet their appreciation for nature by going on hikes or donating to their local conservatory. John Houshmand hacks up trees. Quite beautifully, we might add. The upstate NY-based designer has been working with wood for decades and won the 2005 Chrysler Design Innovator award for his functional art, ironically disguised as furniture. Equal parts minimalist and conservationist, Houshmand’s work is stunningly simple, crafted from glass, steel, and, most importantly, wood left in its natural state wormholes, awkward shapes, and all. Various collections include the Shazam, a series of timber-wrapped glass tables and benches that utilize slabs of striking woods like maple to black walnut, as well as the Clearly Functional, an artistic and elegant blend of acrylic, glass, and walnut. While Houshmand has amazing finished products for sale, he is also available for custom work.
LIFTLUXE offers the man with discerning taste his necessary daily dose of everything from nightlife and travel to the latest tech gear. If you fit this description (and we know you do) hop on over and check out the latest on the international luxe life.
The newest addition to the JOHNHOUSHMAND collection, Low Table No. 0173.5, is large – to say the least. Slightly over 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep – it fondly engendered the name “Coffee Table of the Gods” around our production facility.
This table was created from a unique black walnut that crotched into six different branches, like a close knit family. We are certain that the influence of such a totemic centerpiece will breed a similar sense of congeniality in the home of its new owners.
The unique shape of this low table particularly inspires informal entertaining – the far hanging shoots call out for a bowl of dip or a wine glass (or both), while the organic outline of the table tempts one to pull up a pillow and relax with friends and a deck of cards.
However the table is ultimately used, it is sure to bring much visual enjoyment for years to come.
Every great designer aspires to create unique pieces that will last a lifetime. JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s No. 008.10 Low Table has become one of those pieces.
This elegant low table was commissioned by Interieurs and for good reason not much has been changed since John designed the first No. 008 low table; the piece still retains all the vitality and contemporaneity it had when it was first created. The smooth slab of elm rests on two 3/4 inch glass legs to create the perfect addition to any home. Attention grabbing but subdued, this low table is a tried and true JOHNHOUSHMAND classic.
Sophisticated, whimsical and unconventional … who said benches have to be boring?
Created by JOHNHOUSHMAND for a private Tribeca residence, this small, forgotten entrance way was transformed into an inviting and tranquil resting place. The unusual proportions of the room are used to full advantage by the asymmetrical arrangement of two floating benches. The single starfire glass leg compliments the fish-eye window, which looks out on a well-appointed roof garden.
The golden glow from the live edge spalted maple gives this otherwise unadorned entryway a warm atmosphere, while the positioning of the benches gives the small space a dynamic presence that’s all its own.
JOHNHOUSHMAND is very pleased to have been recently featured on That Vegan Blog for our winning combination of sleek sustainability and attention-grabbing design as well as DesignSpotter with our new take on a modern classic: the brand new No. 0222 Cast Aluminum Director’s Chair.
