JOHNHOUSHMAND - No. 0184

The JOHNHOUSMAND family of design has grown leaps and bounds over the past couple of years.  From simple roundback benches to sleek microslab low tables, we’ve run the gamut – but it hasn’t been sheer coincidence.  Our Black Walnut No. 0184 desk with acrylic legs and two drawers was such a hit that it inspired a new iteration of the seamless combination of wood and acrylic… introducing the No. 0237.2 Black Walnut and acrylic dresser!

JOHNHOUSMAND - No. 237.2We love the effect the slices of acrylic make on the ends of the dresser, giving a light and airy touch.   The clear acrylic slab contrasts with the exquisite character of the Black Walnut, and lends a touch of  magic to the structure of the dresser.  The special cut of the acrylic handles also adds luminosity against the dark wood.  We wonder what this new piece will inspire next!

Introducing a seamless fusion of form and function, the No. 0237, JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s first dresser, with ebonized oak and a bleached spalted maple microslab.

Organization is key in any home, be it a tiny New York apartment or a beautiful home in Colorado (which, coincidentally, is where this creation is headed), and so we thought we could help with an elegant storage solution.  At 54 inches wide, 18 inches deep and 32 inches high and with six drawers this dresser keeps clothes organized and within easy reach. Along with these spacious drawers we fabricated custom made hardware for this stunning dresser. Cut to precision out of blackened steel, these specifically designed pull handles add elegant detail and ensure smooth gliding when drawers are in use.

With two distinct finishes and six drawers, this dresser is sure to be a welcome addition to any bedroom.

A JOHNHOUSHMAND Zen Garden

JOHNHOUSHMAND AT THE ICFFIt has been a whirlwind of a weekend with the kickoff of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF)!  The JOHNHOUSHMAND team stayed up late Friday putting the finishing touches on our very own zen garden at booth #1122.

JOHNHOUSHMAND AT THE ICFF

We wanted to let the natural beauty of our furniture speak for itself in a calming oasis.  Using sand, stones, slate tiles, and moss we created a unique environment for our wood, metal and glass pieces.  We even developed a special sand-paste in order to make a one-0f-a-kind flooring that looks like loose sand but can be walked across freely without breaking the swirling pattern.

Additionally for this special occasion JOHNHOUSHMAND debuted two new pieces!  Both the Tattooed Acrylic Cicada Side Table and the Petrified Wood Low Table were noticeable show stoppers amongst the classics on show.  JOHNHOUSHMAND was one of hundreds of exhibitors at the fair this year including Kohler, Jonathan Adler, Lindsey Adelman, Charles Pollock, Blu Dot, Artek, and many more.

Our newest custom finish is pure beauty without the pain:  tattooed wood and acrylic.  At JOHNHOUSHMAND we love the natural and uncontrollable characteristics in salvaged wood but this “tattoo” finish is a custom dream.

At the shop upstate we create a CAD drawing of the desired graphic and send it to a CNC machine which routes out the graphics from either wood or acrylic.  Next we fill the path in with epoxy (which can be any number of colors) to really bring out the image.  So not only do we have control over the image but also the color and thickness of line!  Flexibility at its finest.

Specially Made

When we say custom we really mean it.  Slab selection is a unique process at JOHNHOUSHMAND in order to give our customers truly one-of-a-kind pieces.

Slab Selection - No. 0187

It begins after the client picks one of the over 200 pieces in our product portfolio.  One of our awesome salespeople then discusses specifics such as wood species and dimensions for the piece.  Once the salesperson receives the client’s specs he/she then talks to Jim, our production manager at our 950-acre facility.  Jim will then go to our abundant library of slabs searching for the top four slabs that best match the client’s criteria.  The client chooses from these four slabs and we can begin producing a distinctive piece suited just for them.  Here are some photos of slab selection process for one of our No. 0187.1 Shazam low tables for a client.

Visitors are welcome to come by the shop to take a look around anytime. It is quite the operation and allows us to control each detail of a project. Plus, it gives our clients the opportunity to be creative and conjure up work that is like no other in our style. If by chance you find yourself in upstate New York one day, just let us know and we will give you a tour!

Singularly-harvested with Love

· How to Talk Like John, Tree Travels, Uncategorized · , , , , , ,

A lot of people ask us about where we get our beautiful slabs of wood, and the answer really is all around.  At JOHNHOUSHMAND we don’t harvest wood for our furniture but instead utilize trees that have been felled or damaged by storms, need to be cut down due to safety or otherwise.  Hobart, New York really has become John Houshmand’s home and so he is on a first name basis with numerous members of the Catskill community who let him know if they know of any trees that need to be removed.

JOHNHOUSHMAND

It’s inspiring to see every part of the process from helping out another in the community, to having some fun climbing the trees, to starting to the create the custom-made furniture that we love to produce.

Debuting at the ICFF: Black Walnut and Hammered Bronze Dining Table

· Events, Furniture Designs · , , , , , , , ,

There is a flurry of activity happening at our upstate workshop this spring, and many new works will be debuting at the 23rd annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair. (ICFF, Javits Center, NYC: Sunday May 14-Tuesday May 17th)

Here is a sneak peek at one of our brand new works:

The bright No. 0050.4 Hammered Bronze and Roundback Dining Table/Console is the first ever to feature a light polished bronze leg with an undulating curve. The beautifully rich black walnut roundback is set on hand-hammered bronze legs. The deep color of the wood is offset by the luminous curved bronze base, capturing light and shadow effortlessly. Custom designed for a Central Park West apartment with a classic Upper East Side aesthetic, this dining table will be the centerpiece among a contrasting set of plush wing-back chairs after the ICFF is over.

In addition to No. 0050.4, our booth at the ICFF will feature the new (and never before seen) Moon Rise Low Table, related to the No. 0101 Sandblasted Doily Starfire Glass Side Table (above). We will also be bringing back old favorites from our New York City showroom and several pieces on loan from our Los Angeles Showroom at the Pacific Design Center, including No. 0028 Gnawed Beaver Branches Low Table as well as the No. 0176 Topographic Table.

Come see your favorites in person and prepare to be wowed by even more unexpected unveilings!
