Endless Possibilities

In April we announced a new custom finish:  Tattooed Acrylic and Wood.  Now after months of experimentation and anticipation we are excited to present our first tattooed table:  the No. 0238 acrylic side table with black legs and a cicada “graphic tattoo”.

JOHNHOUSHMAND - No. 0238 Tattooed Cicada Side Table

We first unveiled this piece in May at our booth at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (see below).  With a treatment like this tattoo the possibilities really are endless!  The fill color, width of line, graphic, and material are all up to the imagination.  As you can see here, we decided to emblazon our very first tattooed product with one of John’s favorite creatures:  the cicada.  You may know this mysterious insect from the cicada song that can be heard in the summertime in heavily wooded areas.  We’ve learned to embrace cicadas even though they can damage and cause scarring to tree branches.  Just like a beauty mark, we see this natural marking as something to be proud of.

The Little Nell

The Little Nell Hotel in Aspen, Colorado has gone under a complete transformation in the hands of the acclaimed design firm: Holly Hunt.  Just this winter, Holly Hunt Design completed the makeover of the Little Nell’s living room utilizing luxurious leathers, rich woods and custom-made JOHNHOUSHMAND pieces.

Hunt and her design team updated the 22 year old 5-star hotel with an “Aspen Modern” look, thereby preserving the comfortable lodge feeling yet opening up the space with more streamlined design.  To this eclectic mix, JOHNHOUSHMAND contributed two matching end tables (No. 0229) and a 3-piece coffee table (No. 0228).

JOHNHOUSHMAND - No. 0228

No. 0228, the 3-piece black walnut coffee table, is made from a single slab and blackened steel legs. The center table features an open-frame, rectangular base, perfect for storing and displaying books. The two corresponding end tables include a three-plated, Y-shaped base. The asymmetrical nature of these bases allow for flexibility in placement, with no one face being dominant to the others. The slab selected for the top, which includes two prominent knot holes and a desaturated, live edge was chosen for its unique character and rustic appeal.

JOHNHOUSHMAND - No. 0229

The base of No. 0228 is echoed in the contemporary design of No. 0229 – two, glass topped, end tables which are mirror reflections of one another. These bases are also Y-shaped, but being made of black walnut, have narrow live edges and beautiful, streaks of natural color variations.

These pieces were designed especially for a project and a place where nature and cutting edge design meet.

wham bam… SHAZAM

· Furniture Designs, Uncategorized · , , , ,

At the end of last year, JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s No. 0187 Shazam low table gained acclaim in the design community earning the esteemed Interior Design Magazine’s Best of the Year, residential furnishings award. And now, another Shazam low table has found its way into a beautiful Aspen home.

JOHNHOUSHMAND - No. 0187

This striking table is the perfect blend of fluidity and structure, femininity and masculinity. The cutting edge design works well in numerous settings while still very much remaining a focal, conversation piece. The striking rings and grains of the rich black walnut microslab are highlighted against the sleek starfire glass box.

We’re excited to see where the Shazam table ends up next!

Debuting at the ICFF: Black Walnut and Hammered Bronze Dining Table

· Events, Furniture Designs · , , , , , , , ,

There is a flurry of activity happening at our upstate workshop this spring, and many new works will be debuting at the 23rd annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair. (ICFF, Javits Center, NYC: Sunday May 14-Tuesday May 17th)

Here is a sneak peek at one of our brand new works:

The bright No. 0050.4 Hammered Bronze and Roundback Dining Table/Console is the first ever to feature a light polished bronze leg with an undulating curve. The beautifully rich black walnut roundback is set on hand-hammered bronze legs. The deep color of the wood is offset by the luminous curved bronze base, capturing light and shadow effortlessly. Custom designed for a Central Park West apartment with a classic Upper East Side aesthetic, this dining table will be the centerpiece among a contrasting set of plush wing-back chairs after the ICFF is over.

In addition to No. 0050.4, our booth at the ICFF will feature the new (and never before seen) Moon Rise Low Table, related to the No. 0101 Sandblasted Doily Starfire Glass Side Table (above). We will also be bringing back old favorites from our New York City showroom and several pieces on loan from our Los Angeles Showroom at the Pacific Design Center, including No. 0028 Gnawed Beaver Branches Low Table as well as the No. 0176 Topographic Table.

Come see your favorites in person and prepare to be wowed by even more unexpected unveilings!

Just One Isn’t Enough: Black Walnut & Bronze Patina Consoles

Variations within individual wood logs are such that different segments will show a wide range of personality. These three console tables, No. 0050.1, No. 0050.2, and No. 0050.3 each have their own distinctive flavor. The black walnut tops were crafted from squared off roundbacks and are in line with JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s philosophy of using the entire tree. A pair of perpendicular bronze patina legs were then attached to complete each piece.

These three consoles are being sent off to the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (covered previously on this blog) where they will be used in hallways and entryways. These consoles would translate perfectly to the home: in a foyer collecting car keys and mail, a unique sidebar set-up at a cocktail party, or showcasing family photos and keepsakes behind a couch.

Though no matter the use it is clear, repetition of this kind is far from boring. One just isn’t enough!

JOHNHOUSHMAND on the secondary market … Thanks to SURFACE Magazine

· Furniture Designs, Uncategorized · , ,

When SURFACE Magazine’s CONCEPT House in Bolinas, California was sold, this sculptural table designed by JOHNHOUSHMAND was deemed a tad too dicey for the new owners with their young children. As the adage goes, “Children change everything (especially white sofas)”.

Now, this amazing piece is back on the market, and on display at our LA showroom in the Pacific Design Center (PDC). It is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, pedigreed, signed, and numbered.

Thank you SURFACE!
