Our Handmade Furniture Process

OUR SHOP
At the shop, we have our own sawmill, drying barns, kilns, spray room and metal shop. We also have an inventory of over 2000 slabs of American hardwoods in a cornucopia of sizes and shapes ranging from conservative to the never before seen, nor will be seen again types. We also have an amazing array of stumps and roots and logs that can be crafted into furniture or sculpture. Our woods are singularly harvested, salvaged, reclaimed and gathered by happy accidents and through a word of mouth network.

THE “JOHNHOUSHMAND” EXPERIENCE
Since our shop is a soup to nuts operation, it gives our clients ultimate flexibility to conjure up work in collaboration with John to create absolutely one-of-a-kind pieces. Whether it’s just a concept in your mind’s eye or your proprietary design, you will collaborate with John and imagineer your pieces through his unique vision.

When approaching all work JOHNHOUSHMAND takes a minimal intervention stance, not only from an environmental and social perspective, but also from a design perspective – allowing the materials’ natural form to guide the creative process. All contemporary furniture designed by JOHNHOUSHMAND is original, signed, limited editions entirely fabricated in the Catskill mountains of New York.

PLACING AN ORDER: FURNITURE
Beginning with the receipt of your deposit, we embark on a production cycle that is typically 16 weeks. We are partners with you in the production process: there are milestone dates for both of us. We will provide you with the due dates for the information that we need from you – whether it be slab approval or design approval. Time is of the essence in meeting these deadlines so that we remain on track, together, for the 16-week delivery goal.

PLACING AN ORDER: ARCHITECTURAL
Each architectural project will have a timeline developed to satisfy its ultimate installation requirements. We are partners in this process so consistent communication is of the essence. For larger scale projects, thoughtful consideration must be given to the actual timelines as behavior patterns of natural materials can vary. On site visits are not included in the project fee and will be billed separately.

SLAB SELECTION & APPROVAL
Hard to say, but possibly one of the more exciting parts of the creation process – except for delivery! Within a week of receipt of your deposit we will email you images of several slabs for your selection. You will be able to see the slab’s character features, which will guide you in making both an informed and heartfelt decision.

If you are in the area, we invite you up to our shop in Hobart, NY to select your slabs in person. It’s always remarkable to see the slab up close, feel it and understand the subtleties of the individual tree.
