This minimalist hacienda style courtyard home, designed in collaboration with New Zealand architect David Howell, is a tranquil and expansive respite from the abrasion of modern life.

TASCHEN’s new book release Interiors Now! Vol.2 shows the world John Houshmand’s peaceful Mexican retreat. Situated on 9 acres of land, the Tierra Adentro house forges a living space from the luminous interiors, elemental architecture, and breathtakingly expansive landscape. Features of the house include cast concrete fixtures, volcanic stone, brick “boveda” ceilings, terracotta floors, local artwork, and JOHNHOUSHMAND original furniture pieces.

“The Interiors Now! series features the world’s most amazing, exquisite, and interesting contemporary apartments and houses. With an inspirational richness and diversity of styles, here are homes, residences, hideaways, and studios to astound and astonish, no matter what your taste.”  -TASCHEN

The property is located seven miles from San Miguel de Allende, near the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, renowned for its Baroque art and architecture. San Miguel de Allende is an artists’ mecca and vacation destination, and has been attracting foreign artists and students since the 1950s, when Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros worked there.

This house has also been featured in Interior Design Magazine and Russian Architectural Digest. It is available for short-term and long-term time-share vacation rentals. For rental inquiries, visit Retreat Mexico.

W Hotel New York Lexington Benches

As a followup to our last post on the W Hotel in Hoboken, we thought we’d share another piece JOHNHOUSHMAND created for the W Hotel New York Lexington Avenue. This pair of Extinct Old Growth Heart Pine Low Benches were constructed for the Extreme Wow Penthouse Suite terrace. These old growth heart pine timbers were reclaimed from renovated New York City buildings, saving this precious wood from being carelessly discarded. They now live a continued life as gorgeously minimalistic benches atop Lexington Avenue.

Not only are these bespoke benches perfect for the out-of-doors, but also compliment indoor decor beautifully. The inherent history within these timbers lends character and meaning to their surface. Perfect for entryways, hallways, living rooms, or even at the foot of a bed, these benches will add charm and history to any part of your space.

Just One Isn’t Enough: Black Walnut & Bronze Patina Consoles

Variations within individual wood logs are such that different segments will show a wide range of personality. These three console tables, No. 0050.1, No. 0050.2, and No. 0050.3 each have their own distinctive flavor. The black walnut tops were crafted from squared off roundbacks and are in line with JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s philosophy of using the entire tree. A pair of perpendicular bronze patina legs were then attached to complete each piece.

These three consoles are being sent off to the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (covered previously on this blog) where they will be used in hallways and entryways. These consoles would translate perfectly to the home: in a foyer collecting car keys and mail, a unique sidebar set-up at a cocktail party, or showcasing family photos and keepsakes behind a couch.

Though no matter the use it is clear, repetition of this kind is far from boring. One just isn’t enough!

For the first time on any stage, The Silver Bullet Dining Table debuts in the white metal spotlight at our NYC Showroom.

The Silver Bullet [chêne argent] once again pushes the envelope of sustainable natural beauty by casting the high character grains of an oak slab into aluminum, perched on two stained black walnut legs.

Come meet the Silver Bullet in its luminous splendor at the 31 Howard Street showroom. There you will discover its preserved grain texture, explore the contours of its live aluminum edge, and experience its refreshingly cool touch. You’re welcome to linger as long as you like; we won’t tell your dining table.

No. 0201: The Hard Working Lazy Susan

· Furniture Designs · , ,

One of JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s most recent creations – No. 0201 – a mulberry lazy susan with blackened steel legs is bound for the tropical climates of Acapulco, Mexico. While our pieces are always enviable, we never imaged we would actually be envious of one!

Though it’s hardly surprising this particular dining table is bound for a more luxurious, slower paced life, as the design itself is ideal for lazy Sunday brunches and quiet family dinners. The heavy, circular Mulberry top was put together from five pie cuts of a live-edge slab, giving the impression of a massive 6-foot wide end grain plug. The hidden lazy susan armature was placed in the center with a satin stainless steel disk. This concave area was then filled with an acrylic pour, at which time an additional Mulberry center medallion was affixed.

The curved, blackened steel legs – set into the top asymmetrically, provide a stable but whimsical finish to the piece.

Making Waves – Hong Kong, 2011

· Furniture Designs · , ,

Leave it to JOHNHOUSHMAND to figure out that casting a wood slab into acrylic would make for a natural, organic, diffraction grating! The clear acrylic transmits light perfectly (a giant fiber optics transmitter). But all interruptions – that means each and every natural grain, inclusion, and pocket in the wood –  catch the light and “pop” it.

Reception Desk No. 0199 - Spalted Maple with Illuminated Cast Acrylic Apron

This became the brainstorm for our latest creation – a reception desk developed specifically for the new Kerry Properties Tower in Hong Kong’s bustling Quarry Bay district. The fascia is as linear as a Mondrian painting, but the apron has the serpentine lines of a Fibonacci curve or golden spiral.

JOHNHOUSHMAND‘s reception desk is composed of three distinctive parts: a spalted maple facia, a solid slap top, and an undulating cast acrylic apron lit by eco-friendly LED lights.

The facia consists of a seemingly random plane of intersecting, rectangular pieces, whose varying depths and thicknesses creates a veritable living topography. These disparate pieces are unified by the simplicity of the unadorned maple slab countertop. However, the cast acrylic apron is unquestionably the show-stopping element.

At once stark and opulent, we feel this piece captures the fascinating dynamism of Hong Kong.

JOHNHOUSHMAND presents:2 Fold Cast Aluminum Desk

We love our clients and not just because they have excellent taste (cough, cough) – but particularly because each one puts their own unique spin on their JOHNHOUSHMAND custom design. Digital media executive, entrepreneur, field hockey star, and techie Christine Hunsicker was the first client to purchase our innovative cast aluminum desk (seen below).

This piece was installed last year in Hunsicker’s downtown NYC loft apartment; a space that oozes effortless style from floor to vaulted ceiling. Pairing the desk with a burnt-tangerine, Scandinavian wood chair, a vegetable-dyed, Cubex lounger, bespoke JOHNHOUSHMAND “Bungalow” shelving, high-gloss floors, and a mountain of books (all actually read!) Hunsicker curated an environment where any creative would feel inspired. It is no surprise that the President/COO behind Right Media, the online exchange scooped up by Yahoo! Inc., would be able to “optimize” the impact of such divergent items. (Nerd joke alert). Plus, the way the light from Hunsicker’s two-story glass wall plays on the super-reflective surface of our cast aluminum table really highlights our handiwork!

Dining Table SALE

I’m not talking about hate… I’m talking about eight. Dinner at eight! Let’s eat!

-Firesign Theatre

Dining tables are a cornerstone of the JOHNHOUSHMAND series. It is where we explore and refine many of our core design concepts, where we test the interaction between materials, and where we debut new developments in an already nuanced collection.

Perhaps this is the case because the dining table is also, in many ways, the cornerstone of the home. It is where we come to eat, to work, to play, and to gather together in celebration with those people closest to us. We believe the elegant yet bold style of our dining tables offers the perfect destination for these varied activities. Simple enough to be inviting, but dynamic enough to draw you in.

This holiday season JOHNHOUSHMAND is offering a DINING TABLE SALE so you can entertain in style, and enjoy those memories for years to come.

You can view all DINING TABLES HERE.
